Excerpts From

They Were Ours

Gloucester County's Loss in Vietnam

I always thought he would be the one to make it back.  He had such a cavalier attitude about the war.  He would joke about it before he left.  He sure came back, but not the way I thought he would.

(Mary Pollard, of husband MSG William Pollard, Silver Star Recipient)

Here I am in a war in a foreign land.

Why I am here I know for sure,

I know what the price of freedom cost.

And I know many lives have been lost.

For the price is high and every second

That passes by many lose their lives.

If only this war could be settled by

One more life taken on the spot.

Oh, Lord, I'd ask for you to pick me

To step forward and

Give my life so it would stop.

(A Prayer by PFC James E. Vause to his parents.)
